In the early 20th century, a booming logging industry drove the economy along the Oregon coast. A constant flow of harvested trees was formed into “log rafts” and, guided by tug boats, floated down the Siuslaw River to a number of busy sawmills. Business was literally buzzing until the 1950s, when maxed out production and over logging finally exhausted the viable forests.
