Riding on the centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal and captain Shubman Gill, India made a spectacular start to the Test series at Headingley, reaching 359/3 on Day 1. Yashasvi (101) and captain Shubman (127*) both scored centuries before Rishabh Pant’s unbeaten 65 supported the strong opening stand.

In India's first match post the retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in Test cricket, Shubman Gill was tasked with a huge task as not only did they not face a tough task facing England in the first match of a massive five-match Test series but also the 25-year-old was in a way replacing both legends.

Shubman Gill silenced critics of his overseas Test record with a composed 140-ball century on his captaincy debut in the Headingley Test on June 20, matching Virat Kohli's feat and starting India's new era strongly.
