Between 1981 and 1985, 112 Rocky Mountain elk were again stocked. This time they were placed near the Buffalo National River in Newton County.

Three special public land elk hunting permits will be available to register for on-site at the Buffalo River Elk Festival, June 22-23.

You can apply during the Buffalo River Elk Festival at Jasper on Friday, June 28, and Saturday, June 29. It is different from the online-only process of the regular elk applications.

Vice President, Tammy Casey, said this event's anniversary is a milestone. "For 25 years, the Buffalo River Elk Festival has celebrated the natural beauty and wildlife of the Ozarks," Casey said.

Some 450 to 500 elk roam the state today. Most call the Buffalo River country thome. There are enough elk that Arkansas has a brief, limited-permit elk hunting season.
